The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) said the Eastern Province has witnessed a package of water projects that contributed to further evolving the sustainability of water supply through the expansion of production capacities, the development of transmission systems, and the increase of storage capacities.

SWA explained that these projects have raised the total desalinated water production capacity in the Eastern Province to 3 million m3 per day, following the entry into service of three production plants. These include the Al Khobar production plant (Phases I and II) with a capacity of 840,000 m3 per day, the Jubail production plant – Phase IV with a capacity of 400,000 m3 per day, and the Jubail One Million production plant with a capacity of 1 million m3 per day.

On the transmission side, SWA said desalinated water transmission systems were implemented and expanded to raise operational capacities to more than 3.1 million m3 per day. This was achieved through interconnection projects covering transmission systems from Al Khobar to Dammam, from Jubail to cities across the Eastern Province, and from Al Khobar to Al Hofuf in Al Ahsa Governorate, in addition to King Salman Energy City. These projects contributed to increasing transmission capacity by 190% compared with previous levels.

SWA noted that desalinated water reservoirs were constructed and upgraded, raising storage capacities in the Eastern Province by 140%. This supports the sustainability of supply during peak periods and enhances the readiness of the water system to address operational changes.

SWA also adopted advanced operational maneuvering plans, including the application of reverse pumping across several water transmission systems, ensuring greater operational flexibility and the sustainable delivery of water to beneficiaries under various conditions.

In addition, supportive operational solutions were implemented during emergency situations to enhance the reliability of water supply and ensure its continuity without interruption.

SWA confirmed that these projects serve the cities of Safwa, Ras Tanura, Qatif, Saihat, Dammam, Dhahran, Al Khobar, Al Ahsa, and King Salman Energy City. They form part of SWA’s ongoing efforts to ensure the stability of water supplies and raise the reliability of water services provided to beneficiaries.
