A World Bank delegation commended the rapid transformation of Saudi Arabia’s water sector, praising the Saudi Water Authority for developing the sector’s regulatory framework within a short period. The delegation noted that these efforts have strengthened governance, improved efficiency, and enhanced sustainability. The remarks were made during a meeting with His Excellency Eng. Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Abdulkarim, President of the Saudi Water Authority, attended by several of the Authority’s senior officials.
The delegation was led by Meskerem Brhane, Regional Director for Sustainable Development for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
Both sides reviewed the progress achieved under the strategic cooperation project between the Authority and the World Bank, along with the Authority’s latest developments. They also discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest and reviewed the World Bank’s perspective on key global trends and future challenges facing the water sector.
The World Bank delegation highlighted the integrated water value chain model adopted by Saudi Arabia in managing the water sector, covering the entire cycle from water production, transmission, storage, and distribution to wastewater collection, treatment, and reuse. The delegation emphasized that this comprehensive approach represents a significant advancement over traditional models that focus on specific aspects of the sector and has contributed to improving the operational, financial, and environmental efficiency of water services.
The delegation also noted that the Saudi experience has become one of the leading models that can serve as a reference for developing water sector management at the international level.
Both sides emphasized the importance of continuing cooperation and exchanging expertise to support the development of the sector, promote the adoption of international best practices, and expand partnership opportunities in advancing the sustainability of water resources, further strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position as an active international partner in developing water solutions.
