The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) announced that the Shuaibah (5) desalination plant has achieved a landmark milestone by exceeding its design capacity by 11%, increasing its production from 600,000 to 665,000 m3 per day of desalinated water without any additional financial costs. This reflects efficient project management and the maximization of asset utilization, enhancing supply reliability and supporting water security and sustainability.

SWA explained that this increase represents added value for the water system, as it contributes to improving the reliability of supply and optimizing infrastructure investment while maintaining the highest approved standards of energy efficiency and operational requirements.

SWA confirmed that the project received a Guinness World Records certificate for the lowest global energy consumption rate in reverse osmosis desalination, at 1.7 kilowatt-hours per cubic meter. This achievement reflects technological progress in the design, implementation, and operation of modern desalination plants by national engineering and technical capabilities.

SWA said the project also won the Asian Water Awards for 2025 after achieving zero carbon emissions, underscoring international recognition of the Kingdom’s leadership in energy efficiency in the desalination sector and positioning the project as a global reference for high-efficiency seawater desalination plants.

SWA noted that these achievements have strengthened the Kingdom’s global standing in energy efficiency within the desalination sector, with the World Bank commending the Saudi experience in the Shuaibah (5) project as an advanced model for improving energy efficiency in desalination projects.

SWA indicated that the direct impact of this performance is reflected in Makkah Region through enhanced reliability of water supplies during peak seasons, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan and the Hajj season. This ensures service sustainability and raises system readiness to meet the growing demand of Umrah performers and the Guests of Allah, while maintaining energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in support of a safe and integrated hospitality experience.

SWA affirmed that this achievement builds on its ongoing efforts to support the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, particularly in reducing carbon emissions exceeding 2 million tons annually and adopting environmentally friendly technologies that enhance resource sustainability and reinforce the Kingdom’s global leadership in water services.
