World Water Day, observed annually on March 22, is a global recognition of the essential role water plays in human life. The idea for this international day dates back to 1992, the year of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. That same year, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 47/193, declaring March 22 as World Water Day, recognizing the significance of water, which covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface.

Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest producer of desalinated water and a global leader in water innovation, harnessing artificial intelligence in desalination to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The Kingdom is also pioneering the use of palm trees to combat corrosion and extend the life of vital water infrastructure. These innovations have cemented Saudi Arabia’s status as a global hub for water technologies, reflecting its firm commitment to sustainability, climate adaptability, and environmental protection.

The Kingdom’s water sector is built on an integrated institutional structure with clearly separated functions across the entire supply chain, underscoring the strategic role of the Saudi Water Authority under the umbrella of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. The Authority is tasked with overseeing, regulating, and planning to ensure the sector’s long-term sustainability, compliance with standards, and high-quality service delivery.

In collaboration with all relevant water sector entities, the Saudi Water Authority is redefining sustainable water management, ensuring the Kingdom remains a global benchmark in efficiently managing scarce water resources. The Authority currently supervises the production of over 15 million cubic meters of water per day from both public and private sectors, achieving top efficiency in energy use, capital, and operational costs. The produced water is transported via a highly efficient transmission network exceeding 14,000 km across diverse terrains, and delivered through a distribution network stretching over 135,000 km across the Kingdom.
