WTIIRA institute

WTIIRA institute was established in 1987 in Al-Jubail city as a specialized institute for research and innovation, in response to the growing need for advanced solutions in water sector and to address the complexity and rapid growth of water industry. Since its inception, the institute has distinguished itself by possessing a unique infrastructure and advanced research facilities, which qualified it to become a major contributor to the development of water technologies locally and internationally.

The Saudi Water Authority (SWA) relies heavily on WTIIRA Institute to support its facilities in the water sector. The institute’s research programs and activities are designed to meet the highest standards of scientific excellence, with a focus on practical applications of research and technological innovation. This contributes to delivering high-quality solutions in water technologies and enhancing the Kingdom’s leadership in this vital sector.

Over the years, the institute has played a pivotal role in supporting the Saudi Water Authority by carrying out a wide range of research projects that have contributed to the sustainability of the water production sector. These projects include applied research aimed at improving the efficiency of desalination technologies and reducing operational costs, with a focus on environmentally sustainable technologies.

Among the institute`s most notable contributions is its direct support for seawater production systems on the Kingdom’s eastern and western coasts, by improving material utilization efficiency and addressing operational challenges. This has resulted in significant cost savings and improved operational performance.

The institute is actively engaged in delivering precise technical evaluations, addressing operational challenges, and evaluating the performance of materials and equipment used in desalination systems. Additionally, its scope of services include conducting thorough analyses to verify the safety and quality of the produced water, covering chemical, physical, and microbiological parameters, in alignment with both local and international drinking water standards.

Academically and scientifically, the institute has built a distinguished research record by publishing over 339 peer-reviewed scientific papers, in addition to participating in numerous local, regional, and international conferences, which has enhanced its scientific presence on multiple levels. The institute has also obtained 74 patents (registered and granted) and received several awards and honors in recognition of its research contributions.

Furthermore, the institute is an active partner in several collaborative research and development programs with national, regional, and international entities, institutions, and industries. This reflects its ongoing commitment in promoting innovation and research in the desalination industry, and supporting the Kingdom’s vision for a sustainable and secure water future.
