About WTIIRA

The Water Technologies Innovation Institute and Research Advancements (WTIIRA) was established in 1987 in Jubail as a specialized center for research and innovation. Its founding came in response to the growing need for advanced solutions in the water sector and the increasing complexity and rapid development of the industry. Since its inception, the Institute has stood out for its unique infrastructure and advanced research facilities, positioning it as a key contributor to the advancement of water technologies both locally and internationally.

The Saudi Water Authority relies heavily on the Institute to support its facilities across the water sector. The Institute's research programs and activities are designed to meet the highest standards of scientific excellence, with a strong focus on the practical application of research and technological innovation. These efforts contribute to the development of high-impact solutions in water technologies and reinforce the Kingdom's leadership in this vital field.

Over the years, the Institute has played a pivotal role in supporting the Authority by executing a wide range of research projects aimed at ensuring the sustainability of water production. These projects have included applied research to improve the efficiency of desalination technologies and reduce their operational costs, with a particular emphasis on environmentally friendly solutions.

Among its most notable contributions is the Institute's direct support to seawater production systems on both the eastern and western coasts of the Kingdom. This includes improving material efficiency and addressing operational challenges, efforts that have resulted in significant cost savings and improved operational performance.

The Institute's research efforts also include delivering precise technical analyses, assisting in solving operational problems, and evaluating and testing materials and equipment used in desalination systems. Its services extend to conducting comprehensive analyses to ensure the quality and safety of produced water, in line with approved local and international drinking water standards, including chemical, physical, and microbiological assessments.

Academically and scientifically, the Institute boasts a strong research record, having published over 339 peer-reviewed scientific papers and participated in numerous local, regional, and international conferences, which has bolstered its scientific presence across various platforms. The Institute also holds 74 patents (granted or registered) and has received multiple awards and honors in recognition of its research contributions.

Moreover, the Institute is an active partner in various collaborative research and development programs with national, regional, and international organizations and industries. This reflects its ongoing commitment to driving innovation in water desalination and supporting the Kingdom's vision of sustainable water resource management.
